A strategic partnership to shape the future development of Sumburgh Airport was formally signed today (Monday 18 November) by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited, Shetland Islands Council, Shetland Enterprise and Sumburgh Airport Consultative Committee.
Deputy Transport Minister Lewis Macdonald witnessed the signing of the agreement by the partners at Sumburgh Airport this morning.
The formalisation of the strategic partnership was catalysed by discussions with the Scottish Executive on the future of the airport and grew out of closer working relationships between the airport operator, local authority and local enterprise agency.
Through closer working by members the strategic partnership intends to maximise commercial opportunities at the airport to benefit the whole community and wider economy. The goals for the airport will also reflect wider local authority and enterprise company strategies, while by working in concert the partners will also maximise external funding potential for the development of infrastructure and services at Sumburgh.
Key projects for the partners will be the planned extension of the airport’s 09/27 runway and the ongoing marketing strategy for the facility, including attracting more oil and gas related traffic, domestic and international flights into Sumburgh.
The partnership implementation group, responsible for managing the delivery of the strategic plan, will be independently chaired by George Henderson who currently chairs the Airport Consultative Committee and will include representatives from the partner organisations. Regular reports by Mr Henderson will update partners on progress towards strategic goals.
In addition to HIAL, Sumburgh Airport Consultative Committee represents all the main users of the airport together with organisations with wider interests, such as Shetland Islands Council, Shetland Enterprise Company, Dunrossness Community Council, Shetland Islands Tourism, and individuals including our MP and MSP.
Bob Macleod, managing director of HIAL said: "The formalisation of this strategic partnership is an important step for Sumburgh Airport and for all the partners here today. Our clear aim is to develop the airport’s infrastructure and services in an environmentally responsible manner, providing social and economic benefits for Shetland, Scotland and beyond. This step reflects our dual role as an airport operator which involves providing a safe and efficient infrastructure for air services and working with partners in the public and private sectors to promote economic strength, sustainability and inclusion within the communities we serve. I have no doubt that the commitment and enthusiasm within the partnership will help to deliver benefits for the airport, the people of Shetland and the Scottish economy."
Tom Stove, convener of Shetland Islands Council said: "The Council is very pleased that this partnership has been forged. We look forward to playing a full and constructive role in it. For the people of these islands, Sumburgh Airport is an essential link in a lifeline service and is fundamental to the islands’ economy. The air services that use it also serve every kind of social, health and educational need. For many of our visitors, whether they come on holiday or on business, the airport is the gateway to the islands. Nor can we forget that, in the south mainland, it is also an important source of employment. The Council has thoroughly examined the business opportunities that the airport offers, and we believe that the partnership will allow them to be realised. We all know that some further investment is essential, but by working together, we are sure that we can secure a great future for Sumburgh."
Brian Isbister, chairman of Shetland Enterprise said: "Shetland Enterprise Company is delighted to be involved in the partnership. Sumburgh Airport is a key asset in the local economy and it is important that we all work together to ensure its success."
George Henderson, chairman of Sumburgh Airport Consultative Committee said: "The Consultative Committee is delighted to be associated with today’s ceremony. Members are keenly aware that the primary aim of the proposed Airport Strategic Plan is to ensure that aviation services and infrastructure are developed to maximise both economic and social benefits for the whole of Shetland. We are encouraged by the constructive and helpful attitude manifested by all the main partners in the lead up to today’s ceremony and are confident that this presages the production of a sound, sensible and sustainable plan."
