Lewis Wind Farm Proposals
23 March 2004

HIAL looks at all planning applications for wind farms near airports on an individual basis. Since 2000, the company has examined 51 applications for wind farms in areas adjacent to its 10 airports.

HIAL has lodged an objection to the Farm Energy Ltd application at Stornoway on the grounds of aircraft safety due to the proposed site of the turbines on a ridge near the airport. However, the objection relates only to this specific planning application.

The planning objection lodged by HIAL has no bearing on the AMEC/British Energy plans to erect turbines on Stornoway Trust land near Stornoway Airport.

HIAL met with representatives from AMEC and the Trust earlier this year to discuss their proposals. HIAL is in ongoing dialogue with both parties regarding the proposed sites for turbines near the airport and is working with the developers at this stage on issues surrounding air safety.
