| Inverness Airport landing charges |
|
11 August 2004
HIAL has rebutted claims that its landing charges are a deterrent to developing new routes from Inverness Airport.
Inverness Airport’s landing charges are average for the industry, neither the lowest nor highest in Europe.
Bob Macleod, Managing Director of HIAL, said: “Airlines are more interested in passenger volumes than landing charges when it comes to route development and we are confident that our charges are not a deterrent to potential new customers.
“We have achieved an accelerated pace of route development at Inverness in the past two and a half years with new full service and no-frills routes coming on stream. The result is passenger growth of more than 20% in the current year when we expect to handle almost 600,000 passengers, compared to 376,000 in 2001-2002.
“With a population of only 250,000 in the Highlands and Islands, the majority of our passenger traffic is inbound in origin with around 70% of passengers travelling for leisure. This provides a major economic boost to tourism in the region and we are working hard with airlines to ensure that more new routes are introduced at Inverness Airport in 2005. More cross-border links with major UK population centres and direct routes to mainland Europe are priorities for us,” said Mr Macleod.
