Plans to realise the development potential of land at Stornoway to support the local economy and community have been announced by HIAL.
The airport operator is proceeding with the first phase of a scheme that could see non-operational land at the Western Isles’ largest airport developed for homes, a hotel and commercial units.
An outline planning application has been lodged with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) for a six hectare (15 acres) site for uses including housing, an airport hotel and light industrial units. If successful it is hoped that other parcels of land at the airport will be released for housing development in coming years.
Bob Macleod, Managing Director of HIAL, said: “In recent months we have had a number of discussions with the council, local enterprise company and other parties regarding the potential for developing land at the airport. All of us believe this is a very exciting opportunity that will provide major benefits for the local community and economy. Realising the non-aviation potential of land at the airport will play an important part in supporting sustainable communities and economic development in the area in the years ahead.
“The initial plan is to secure the development of an airport hotel by a commercial operator, some new housing and light industrial units. In the longer term we are keen to see both private and affordable housing developed on land that is surplus to the airport’s operational needs,” said Mr Macleod.
