New improved bus services in Inverness were launched today (Friday 29 June).
Rapsons, in partnership with HITRANS, the regional Highlands and Islands transport partnership, secured over £2 million of funding from the Scottish Executive Bus Route Development Grant scheme for a comprehensive package of service and infrastructure improvements to bus routes serving Inverness Airport.
Warren Mitchell, Rapsons managing director, said: “We know that people expect the highest standards in quality and service when they catch a flight and it is our belief that this principle should also extend to the service we provide.
“Our flagship service linking Holm Park and Inverness city centre to the airport will be operated by four low floor Volvo twin deck buses which meet the latest European emissions standard. They offer passengers the highest level of comfort with luggage racks to cater for airport passengers, CCTV and leather seats fitted with seat belts.
“With this kind of comfort we’re bringing business class to bus travel!”
A new service linking Nairn to the airport is also set to begin on Monday (2 July) along with an improved service linking Lochardil with the city centre which will be timed to meet buses running to the airport. Also kicking off on Monday is an improved service from Inverness to Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre and Croy.
In total 9 new buses are being provided for the new and improved routes. These will be low-floor, allowing easy access for wheelchair users, the elderly and parents with pushchairs. CCTV cameras will also be fitted. New bus shelters will be provided along the routes, with screens giving up-to-date information on services and timetables.
Ranald Robertson, HITRANS programme manager, added: “We are delighted to have worked with Rapsons to secure this package of improvements. This scheme will dramatically improve services in Inverness, making it easier, safer and more convenient for people to travel in and across the city and out to the airport.
“The new route to Nairn links with services to Elgin and Fochabers, opening up the rapidly growing airport to communities to the east. Improved access to Inverness airport is an area we identified in our transport strategy so it is really pleasing to deliver on this commitment so soon.”
