£4 million Investment Underway at Stornoway Airport
19 September 2007

Major infrastructure investment is underway at Stornoway Airport with a replacement of airfield ground lighting (AGL) and an upgrading of its main taxiway.

Highlands and Islands Airports Limited is investing circa £4 million in the projects as part of its 2007/08 capital programme.

Much of the airfield’s existing lighting is 30 years old, dating from its time as a military base, and is now at the end of its life. The £3 million AGL replacement underway will deliver a modern lighting system that will ensure the airport meets its regulatory requirements in the years ahead.

Meanwhile, the airport’s northern taxiway is receiving an overlay to increase its bearing strength and offset normal wear and tear on the airport’s most frequently used taxiway. This element of the capital programme is costing more than £600,000.

A further £330,000 is being invested in ramping areas of the airfield to minimise the risk from obstacles in the vicinity of the runway. This work is being carried out to meet regulatory requirements.

Inglis Lyon, managing director of HIAL said: “Our capital programme aims to ensure that our airports are maintained as fit for purpose. The £4 million investment at Stornoway is to maintain the infrastructure required to enable the safe operation of air services to and from the island.”

Duncan Smith, Stornoway Airport manager added: “We are working closely with the contractors to ensure that the works now underway are programmed to avoid disruption to scheduled flights, as is the case with all HIAL capital projects.”
