Airport fire fighters from Dundee are set to scale new heights for charity next Sunday (28 September) when they climb Ben Nevis.
The group from Dundee Airport Fire Service (AFS) will be climbing Scotland’s highest mountain to raise funds in aid of the International Fire and Rescue Association (IFRA).
The charity climb will be completed in full fire fighting kit to make the task more of a challenge and is expected to take around seven hours. The four AFS members of staff taking part are: Divisional Officer Andrew Lindsay; Crew Commander Gary Johnstone; Fire Fighters Michael Kempton and Scott Raynor.
IFRA is a registered charity and works to assist fire services in countries affected by war and civil unrest or which are too poor to provide a fire service of their own. A number of the Dundee Airport fire fighters have recently participated in aid visits to Albania, Bosnia and South America.
Gary Johnstone said: “I was very privileged to be given the chance to travel to Albania with IFRA, where I spent two weeks training the Albanian Fire Service. The costs involved in sending an appliance, equipment and personnel all over the world can be high and all money used to support IFRA’s work is raised by members through various fundraising means. We had been thinking about how to raise some funds when it was suggested that we climb Ben Nevis. This then spiraled into wearing full fire fighting kit and carrying a breathing apparatus set”.
Andrew Lindsay said: “We have received more than £800 in pledges so far which will support the valuable work of IFRA internationally. Doing the climb in full fire fighting kit makes it a bit more challenging but we expect to complete it in around seven hours.”
Anyone interested in sponsoring the team at Dundee Airport should forward pledges or donations to Dundee Airport Fire Service divisional officer Andrew Lindsay who can be contacted at his alindsay@hial.co.uk email address.
