Board of Directors
The role of the HIAL Board is to challenge the senior management team on its strategy for the business and to provide guidance and support on aviation and non aviation issues.
In particular, the Board reviews safety, security and risk management, corporate governance, finance and secretarial, business strategy, commercial and human resources.
The Directors operate under their formal adoption in March 2004 of the HIAL Board Members Code of Conduct, which is derived from the Model Code produced by the Standards Commission of Scotland, together with recognition of other published corporate governance guidelines.
The Board meets on a six weekly cycle.
HIAL Directors
Grenville Johnston (Chair)
Mr Johnston was appointed Chair of HIAL with effect from 30 March 2010. Mr Johnston is a former HIAL Board Member with seven years experience. He lives in Elgin and is a Chartered Accountant. He was formerly senior partner/consultant with Johnston Carmichael, Chartered Accountants based in Elgin and formerly President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland in 2000/01. He is Chairman of Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd and Cairngorm Mountain Ltd. He is Lord-Lieutenant of Moray.
Inglis Lyon (Managing Director)
Inglis Lyon became HIAL's MD on 27 May 2005. Aberdeen-born Mr Lyon was previously the MD of Stagecoach East. He was educated at Inverness High School and completed an apprenticeship with a local garage, before gaining an honours degree in Transport Technology from the University of Ulster in Belfast. He then joined Stagecoach, where he held a variety of management positions, initially in depot management in Chorley, Bolton and Carlisle, before moving into senior management. He has held the posts of operations director in Cumbria and MD of Stagecoach divisions in: Kenya; Warwickshire and Oxfordshire; Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire (Stagecoach East).
Dr Michael Cantlay (Non-Executive Director)
Michael Cantlay for formerly Chairman and MD of Highland dress manufacturer and retailer "Hector Russell" and specialist retailer "The Whisky Shop." Today his principal UK business is Inverness-shire based William Glen Ltd which owns and operates highland dress businesses in Toronto and San Francisco. Dr Cantlay also brings a strong track record at Board level in the public sector. He is Chair of VisitScotland, an Ex-Officio Board member of VisitBritain and Convener of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Authority. He was formerly Chair of the Board of Management at Forth Valley College, Chair of Scottish Enterprise Forth Valley and an advisory member of the Board of Scottitsh Enterprise. Dr Cantlay lives in Perthshire.
Mr Andrew Castell (Non-Executive Director)
Andrew Castell is a partner in Edinburgh-based venture capital firm Par Equity. A Chartered Accountant, he has a background in the financial sector, having worked in investment banking and the insurance industry. He was formerly Group Finance Director of CBS Insurance Holdings PLC and Goshawk Insurance Holdings PLC. He has particular experience of corporate finance and corporate restructuring. He divides his time between Edinburgh and Inverness-shire.
Mrs "Linn" (Linda) Phipps (Non-Executive Director)
Linn Phipps lives in both West Yorkshire and Lewis and is active in Gaelic culture. She is a Management Consultant and was previously Chair of a large NHS Primary Care Trust. She is now a Non-Executive Director in an NHS Mental Health Trust. She has extensive experience in both executive and non-executive capacities in local government and public transport, including the rail industry. She has special interests in governance and risk. She sings as a gaelic soloist and member of two gaelic choirs and in 2008 won the Silver Pendant at the Royal National Mod, the premier award for learners of gaelic.
Dr Alistair (Charles) Goodlad (Non-Executive Director)
Charles Goodlad is a resident of Shetland and has been involved in a number of local private businesses. He has been very active in local government, transport and economic development circles within the Highlands and Islands, including the Shetland Islands Council, the Shetland Islands Amenity Trust, the Shetland Development Trust and Lerwick Port Authority.
