The employees of HIAL represent its greatest asset. By providing opportunities, facilities and support, HIAL ensures that all members of staff are in possession of the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to perform their role.

A significant proportion of our training activity is focused on technical competence and keeping technical skills fully up to date for staff in specialist roles:

Fire Fighters: On joining the Airport Fire Service, you will receive six weeks training at a CAA Approved Training Provider. On return to the airport, an ongoing training programme is provided to maintain knowledge, understanding and skills.

Air Traffic Control Officers ensure that all aircraft depart and arrive safely. This is a position of huge responsibility working in a high pressure environment where safety is paramount. HIAL employ trainee, part qualified and fully qualified ATCOs, and skills are maintained with ongoing unit training. Air Traffic Assistants and Flight Information Service Officers are also employed at HIAL airports and receive training in areas like Met Training.

Security is a high profile area and our Security Officers provide an environment within the airports to ensure that all regulatory security requirements are met. Staff complete an eight day initial course with regular refresher training to maintain skills, with enhanced training given to our Security Supervisors who provide daily support to our Officers.

General development for all employees is part of an ongoing personal development plan agreed with individuals within each department.
