The role of the HIAL Board is to challenge the Senior Management Team on its strategy for the business and to provide guidance and support on aviation and non aviation issues.
In particular, the Board reviews safety and security, risk management, corporate governance, finance, business and commercial strategy and human resources.
The Directors operate under their formal adoption in March 2004 of the HIAL Board Members Code of Conduct, which is derived from the Model Code produced by the Standards Commission of Scotland, together with recognition of other published corporate governance guidelines.

Dr Mike Cantlay OBE, Chair
Dr Cantlay was appointed Chair of HIAL in July 2016 having previously served on the Board for 6 years from 2008.
Mike is Chairman and Managing Director of William Glen Limited which operates tourism, leisure and retail interests in Scotland, Canada and the USA. He was previously Chair and Managing Director of highland dress manufacturer and retailer “Hector Russell” and also specialist retailer “The Whisky Shop”. He was brought up in Callander, Perthshire where his family still lives and his business is headquartered. He has held several public appointments including Chair of VisitScotland; Convener of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Authority; Chair of Scottish Enterprise Forth Valley; Chair of the Board of Management at Forth Valley College; Advisory Member of the Board of Scottish Enterprise and Board Member of VisitBritain based in London.
Dr Cantlay was awarded Public Sector Leader of the Year at the Scottish Leadership Awards 2012 and was made an OBE in 2014 for services to tourism.
Inglis Lyon, Managing Director
Inglis Lyon became HIAL’s Managing Director in May 2005. Aberdeen-born Mr Lyon was previously the Managing Director of Stagecoach East. Educated at Inverness High School, he completed an apprenticeship with a local garage before gaining an honours degree in Transport Technology from the University of Ulster in Belfast. He then joined Stagecoach, where he held a variety of management positions, initially in depot management in Chorley, Bolton and Carlisle, before moving into senior management. He held the posts of Operations Director in Cumbria and Managing Director of Stagecoach divisions throughout England and also in Africa.
Gillian Bruton, Finance Director
Gillian qualified with a Bachelor of Accountancy Degree from Glasgow University and completed her Chartered Accounting qualification with PWC in Glasgow. She then spent 3 years working as an International Internal Auditor, working globally for Thorn EMI based near London. She joined Polaroid in 1998 where she held various Finance roles of increasing responsibility, ultimately serving as Group Finance Director from 2007 to 2013 for the Polaroid Eyewear division, which manufactures and sells Polaroid Eyewear branded sunglasses globally. She joined Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd as Finance Director in May 2013. This is a joint appointment with Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd.
David Savile, Non-Executive Director
David joined us with 34 years of aviation business experience, 27 as CEO of the global aviation company, Air Partner plc. Under his tenure, the company grew to become the sector leader, increasing sales by a multiple of 16, profits by 900% and market cap by 700%. The company provided specialist aircraft charter flights on all types of aircraft to multinational companies, celebrities, major governments, royalty, presidents and prime ministers. In 2004 David was personally granted a Royal Warrant from Her Majesty the Queen, the first and only such honour to be granted in aviation. David is also a board member of Hangar 8 plc, a private jet management company and has business interests in property and motoryacht charter.
Tim Whittome, Non-Executive Director
Tim graduated as a mechanical engineer in 1970 and has since worked in a variety of consultancy positions. He serves as Chairman of the British Standards Technical Committee on passenger-carrying cableways. He was Chief Executive of the Cairngorm Chairlift Company, and is a non-executive Director of Cairngorm Mountain Ltd. He served on the Board of the Aviemore and Spey Valley Tourist Board and as vice-chairman of the Cairngorms Chamber of Commerce. Tim is a private pilot with more than 1,200 hours of flying experience throughout the UK and in France, Norway, Australia and New Zealand. He is currently Managing Director of Caledonian Air Surveys Ltd, an aerial photography company based at Inverness Airport and lives in Inverness.
Lorna Jack, Non-Executive Director
Lorna has been Chief Executive of the Law Society since January 2009 where she leads the Senior Management Team who are responsible for the delivery of the ‘Towards 2020 Strategy’, the Corporate Plan and Budget for 2013/14. The Law Society is the professional body for Scotland’s 10,000 solicitors working inhouse in government, industry and commerce and in around 1250 firms. Lorna, a Chartered Accountant by profession and a graduate of Aberdeen University, was previously based in the USA as President Americas for Scottish Development International. where she delivered a large operational restructuring and redirection programme.
Jim McLaughlin, Non-Executive Director
Jim’s main home is in Linlithgow and, until recently, he was based in West Cumbria as HR Director for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, which he joined in April 2008. He has more than 30 years’ experience in the construction, power generation and energy supply industries, including roles as Director of Learning for Scottish Power and International HR Director for PacifiCorp, based in the USA. Jim has a good track record at Board level, most recently as Chair of Energus and as a non-executive Director of Direct Rail Services. He also has significant experience as a pension scheme trustee. He is a chartered member of the Institute of Personnel and Development and has an MBA.
