Islay Airport

Islay
Islay Airport terminal building

Islay Airport is situated on the beautiful Island of Islay on the south west coast of Scotland just slightly north of the Northern Irish coast. Islay is known in Scotland as the ‘Queen of the Hebrides’ and this is for very some very good and unique reasons. The island is a gem of an island with plenty of spectacular scenery including golden beaches (one seven miles long situated at the airport) and sea views as well as lush green fields and heather covered hills. The island is lapped on its West Coast by the Atlantic Ocean and warm Gulf Stream, which gives it a surprisingly mild climate.

Useful Links

The island is also world famous for its Malt Whisky with seven individual distilleries producing their own unique distinctive flavours.

If golf is your pastime then we also boast a top class golf course located within a stones throw from the airport. The Machrie Golf Course and Hotel attracts many visitors from around the world to play this old links course, a challenge to all golfers. Fishing is also very popular with many fresh water and sea lochs to choose from. These lochs are so good that this year the European Fishing Championship is to be held on Islay. As well as these attractions Islay is full of interesting archaeological sites dating back as far as the Vikings and beyond. The people today however have a very much better reputation than their early ancestors did and you can rest assured you will find plenty of friendly island hospitality here for you.

Getting to Islay Airport is not as difficult as you first might have thought. The airport lies approximately 25 miles from the Northern Ireland Coastline and 17 miles from the Kintyre peninsula with the distance over water only being between 12 and 20 miles depending on what direction you come from, not to much of a challenge for most pilots. Glasgow, Prestwick and Belfast Airports all lie approximately 60 miles from Islay Airport, with Glasgow to our east and Belfast to our south.

The Airport is situated in a prime location to allow you to be able to explore all of the other islands that lie on the West Coast of Scotland. Islands like Mull, Tiree, Barra, Benbecula and Lewis are all within easy flying distance for the private flyer from Islay, and you will fly over some of the most beautiful coastlines in the world.

There are good transport links between the airport and the main towns on the island. The airport cafe provides a number of bicycles for hire, if you feel energetic enough and just want to enjoy some fresh air. The two main towns on the island lie about 4.5 miles either side of the airport. During the Airport opening hours there is a fully licensed caf open, which serves an excellent choice of light snacks and meals. You can of course buy and sample some of our famous malt whisky as well as other local gifts in the shop.
