Islay Airport and the Local Community

 

Islay airport played host to a celebration of flight and local life when it held the 12th annual Air Show and Open Day on Saturday August 22nd 2009. The Air Show was organised to celebrate the history of the airport and the range of aircraft that have used its services since the first recorded flight there in July 1928, with proceeds from the event going to the Islay Museum of Life.

On show were a range of display Aircraft including:

  • YAK 52
  • Spitfire
  • Messerschmitt
  • Special Bi-plane
  • SE5 World War 1 Bi-plane
  • And the Parachute Display Team from Strathallan

Features of this year's programme will be aerobatic displays by a variety of aircraft, a simulated rescue by HM Coastguard, and a simulated rescue by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service.

Air Discount Scheme
The Scottish Government's Air Discount Scheme (ADS) provides a 40 per cent reduction on air fares between Scotland's remotest communities and cities. ADS applies to people whose main residence is any of the following:

  • Western Isles
  • Orkney
  • Shetland
  • Islay and Jura
  • Caithness and North West Sutherland
