Currently the airport is used as a passenger airport, but it is also utilised by private aircraft including those transitting through to Iceland, Greenland and various EU countries.The Royal Navy uses it for its Joint Tactical Exercises twice  a year. The airport also supports the Scottish Air Ambulance Service.

Within the terminal building there are various facilities for passenger comfort and entertainment, including a cafe offering locally made snacks and hot food, with soft drinks, tea and coffee and a range of gifts, newspapers and books.

The airport prides itself on its local community involvement and tries to support all local producers, schools and charities as much as possible.
