Global travel fans have voted Barra Airport the world’s second most beautiful landing spot.
The private jet booking platform PrivateFly asked the international travel community to name their top landing in its annual survey, with the most votes overall going to Ireland’s Donegal Airport, on the country’s northwest Atlantic coast.
Adam Twidell, CEO of PrivateFly and an experienced pilot, comments: “We saw huge support for Barra in this year’s PrivateFly poll, and it has become an iconic landing with travellers all over the world, over the past few years. There really is nothing to match it anywhere in the world. Landing on the beach is such a unique and spectacular introduction, to a very special place – something that everyone should try and experience at least once in a lifetime!
The top 10 is an annual bucket list for travel fans, a fascinating mix of global descents to fly in your lifetime. From tiny runways like last year’s winner Saba (the world’s shortest commercial runway) and Barra in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, to the major cityscapes offered up by London City or Miami International.”
The PrivateFly Scenic Airports 2018 poll was conducted in February 2018 and received over 8,500 votes. A total of 112 different airports received nominations. PrivateFly teamed up with a panel of travel experts to form the shortlist for the public vote, including aviation writers Rohit Jaggi and Miquel Ros, and travel influencers Henry Conway and Bonnie Rakhit.
The 2018 top ten is as follows:
- Donegal (Ireland)
- Barra (Scotland)
- Nice (France)
- Queenstown (New Zealand)
- Saba (Dutch Caribbean)
- Orlando Melbourne (USA)
- Toronto Billy Bishop (Canada)
- London City (England, UK)
- St Maarten (French/Dutch Caribbean)
- Miami (USA)
You can fly to Barra Airport from Glasgow Airport with Loganair – and additional flights have recently been announced for this summer.
