Highlands and Islands Airports Limited has appointed new station managers at two of its Scottish Island airports. The senior management positions at Tiree and Islay have been accepted by John MacCaskill and Niall Colthart respectively.
John has previously held a number of roles at HIAL, having worked as part of the corporate operational support team in air traffic services for the past 12 years. Previous to this he worked at HIAL’s Inverness head office as part of the health and safety subdivision. Before joining the team at Tiree Airport as a part-time firefighter in 1993, John worked in the island’s local building trade having relocated from Glasgow in the early 1980s.
John said: “I am delighted to take on the station manager role at Tiree Airport. I have always had close family ties with the island and have a genuine interest in the local community. The airport manager role will be a great opportunity to strengthen my involvement in island development and connectivity. Air travel provides a vital transport service to the islanders and I am committed to ensuring that the airport holds its reputation as an integral part of island life.”
John is heavily involved with Island community groups as the current chairperson of the Tiree Transport Forum as well as vice-convenor for Tiree Community Council.
Niall Colthart has firm roots at Islay Airport, having spent much of his childhood at the airport with his father, who was the station engineer as well as an auxiliary firefighter. After a brief stint working on the island’s fishing boats, Niall joined the airport’s fire service aged 21. Niall progressed within the Islay Airport fire service to crew manager and in July 2016, celebrated 20 years of service at the airport.
Niall said: “Due to the size and nature of Islay Airport, I’ve already been involved with several aspects of the day-to-day operations, alongside my primary duty within the airport fire service. I’m looking forward to leading the team at Islay Airport in my new position as station manager, while also ensuring that the island has a successful airport operation.”
As well as being active in the management of security provision, Niall has assisted with air traffic services as a fully trained ASIFO at Islay for 19 years.
As station managers, John and Niall will be responsible for all aspects of airport operations, from passenger transit and airport security measures to air traffic control and the airport’s fire service.
HIAL’s managing director Inglis Lyon said: “It’s great to welcome two local islanders to join the teams at Tiree and Islay airports. Both men have exceptional experience and knowledge of their airports and the local communities. The station manager job is a multi-faceted role encompassing all aspects of the airport operation. I am confident that our new station managers will rise to the challenges associated with running a remote island airport. I look forward to working closely with John and Niall over the coming years to ensure that HIAL’s airport offering continues to support local connectivity across Scotland.”
