Terminal Building Refurbishment at Barra Airport

Work began to refurbish the terminal building at Barra Airport on Monday Monday 26 September 2022.

HIAL is investing approximately £1.5million to modernise the facility. The airport is a popular tourist destination in its own right. This refurbishment will improve and expand the building for passengers, visitors and staff. It will also provide better access and provision for Persons with Reduced Mobility. Passenger numbers at Barra Airport have almost doubled since 1978 when the terminal was built. In 2018 Barra Airport welcomed nearly 15,000 passengers.

The work involves:

  • the existing appliance bay being converted into a Cafe and seating area

  • the construction of a new terrace on the beach side of the terminal

  • the refurbishment of internal fixtures and fittings

  • landscaping to include paving and decking in the surrounding area to improve accessibility.

The work will be carried out over three phases, to minimise the impact on the terminal operations and passengers. The project is expected to be completed by June 2023.

A second public consultation event was held on Wednesday 29 September 2021.
