See the sights

Römerberg and the Old Town - Start in the heart of Frankfurt at Römerberg, the city's historic main square. With its reconstructed medieval buildings, the famous Römer town hall and surrounding narrow streets, it's one of the best places to get a feel for Frankfurt's history. Don't miss Frankfurt Cathedral, or Kaiserdom, just a short walk away.

Main Tower - For one of the best views over the city, head up the Main Tower. From the observation platform you can see Frankfurt's distinctive skyline, the River Main and, on a clear day, far beyond the city.

Museumsufer - Frankfurt is home to an impressive collection of museums, many clustered along both sides of the River Main. Museumsufer, or Museum Embankment, is home to institutions covering everything from art and architecture to film, communication and culture.

Palmengarten - Need a break from the city streets? Frankfurt's Palmengarten is one of Germany's largest botanical gardens, with plants from around the world, greenhouses and beautiful outdoor spaces to explore.

Eat and drink

Frankfurt has its own food traditions and there are plenty of ways to eat like a local.

Try Apfelwein - Frankfurt's signature drink is Apfelwein, a dry, lightly tart apple wine traditionally served in a distinctive glass. Head to Sachsenhausen for some of the city's best-known traditional Apfelwein taverns.

Frankfurter Grüne Sosse - Green sauce is another Frankfurt speciality. Traditionally made with seven herbs, it's commonly served with boiled eggs and potatoes and is a must-try for food-loving visitors.

Frankfurter Würstchen - You can't leave Frankfurt without trying its famous sausage. Frankfurter Würstchen are traditionally served hot with bread, mustard or alongside a simple meal.

Kleinmarkthalle - For something a little more varied, visit Kleinmarkthalle, a covered food market in the city centre where you can browse stalls selling local specialities, international food, fresh produce, cheese, meat and much more.

Get out and explore

Walk along the River Main - Frankfurt is a great city for exploring on foot. Follow the river through the city, stop for a coffee or take in the skyline from the bridges.

Sachsenhausen - Cross the Main and explore Sachsenhausen, one of Frankfurt's best-known neighbourhoods. Its traditional taverns sit alongside independent restaurants, bars and cafés, making it a great place to spend an evening.

Take a trip beyond Frankfurt - Frankfurt's location makes it a useful base for exploring the wider region. From the airport, regional trains connect directly with Frankfurt and other destinations across the Rhine-Main area, while long-distance trains provide connections throughout Germany and into neighbouring European countries.
