Out of Hours
An Out of Hours Permit Scheme operates at some of the HIAL aerodromes. The scheme follows a strict set of guidelines, please see below for the relevant documentation detailing the requirements of the scheme.

Please note our Head Office facility is currently closed with staff working from home. Therefore, we cannot accept or process any applications or cheques by mail. Applications will only be processed electronically and should be returned to firstname.lastname@example.org
Stornoway Airport is operated on a PPR basis – you must complete and return the form Prior Permission Required (updated 12 March 2020) to book in with Air Traffic Control at least three hours prior to arrival.

HIAL Landing fees and Charges
Please note: Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, if you do not have an account with HIAL then payment of landing fees must be made by phone to Stornoway Airport Admin 01851 707439/707420 or ATC 01851 707415. You will need to provide your card details and e-mail address.

For flights arriving outwith the UK, UKBA approval is required 24 hours before arrival – please complete the NDP(A) form.

- For flights to or from non-UK airfields, an HMRC General Aviation Report (GAR) form is required
- For departures direct to an EU destination: No notice is required
- For arrivals direct from another EU destination: 4 hours’ notice is required
- Departures / arrivals from the Channel Islands: 12 hours’ notice is required
- Departures / arrivals from all non-EU airports: 24 hours’ notice is required

For flights within the Common Travel Area (Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man), you must also notify the Police through completion of a GAR. A minimum of 12 hours’ notice is required by law before you travel.

Arriving at Stornoway Airport
It is our aim to make your arrival and stay at Stornoway airport as smooth and enjoyable as possible. To help, please take a little time to read the information below. An airfield map and further Stornoway Airport details are available from the UK AIP.
High visibility clothing is mandatory whilst airside at Stornoway, so please bring a high visibility vest or jacket with you. It is acceptable for one person with high visibility clothing to escort small groups of up to five other people.
Smoking is strictly forbidden anywhere airside.
The use of mobile phones and other personal electronic devices must be minimised whilst airside and is strictly forbidden anywhere near any refuelling activity.
If you are intending to have your aircraft refuelled, it will need to be chocked. Please bring chocks with you if you have them, or if your aircraft has unusual undercarriage such as spat-covered wheels. If you do not have any chocks please inform our handling agent who will be able to supply a set.
The weather at Stornoway is very variable and strong winds are often experienced, so if you intend to leave your aircraft for any length of time we recommend tying down your aircraft or requesting space in the hangar before departing for Stornoway. Tel +44 (0)1851 707415.
If your aircraft requires towing please bring your own tow bar. Stornoway Airport can provide towing, but at owners’ own risk.
If you intend to leave the airside areas of the airport, you will need to identify yourself to our security team on return. To allow ease of access please ensure you bring your pilot’s licence or photographic ID.
Landside & Airside Security
Access to the landside areas of Stornoway Airport is, from the lower apron, through the large vehicle gate with the small pedestrian gate insert (follow the green path). To open the pedestrian gate, first press the electrical release switch on the grey cabinet to the left of the gate, then twist the opening handle. Ensure the gate is securely closed after you pass through.
Be advised the access gate is electronically controlled with a ‘chip & pin’ system, so when you require access airside you will have to firstly visit the Information Desk in the main terminal, then the Security Office, who will issue you with a Temporary Airside Pass (don’t forget to have your photo I.D. and Hi-Vis jacket with you), and they will then escort you through the gate to airside.
Once airside, hangar access is by request from the marshaller, or phone 01851 707415 (ATC).
For access to the ATC building from the lower apron, cross taxiway C via the green path,ensuring the light above the door is green.
For catering, the terminal cafeteria can provide hot and cold drinks, snacks and light meals, including a daily special using ingredients sourced from local suppliers. Takeaway food is also provided. Tel 01851 707019.

The cards that are accepted for fuelling are BP cards, Visa and Mastercard. Without any of these cards, please contact the number below to obtain an Air BP customer code. Without one of the cards listed above or an Air BP customer code, fuel may not be available. Cash is accepted up to a maximum of £600.
