Flying a Drone
HIAL airports are protected by a Flight Restriction Zone (FRZ) which means that it is illegal to fly a drone or remotely piloted aircraft at any time within the zone, unless specific permission has been granted by the airport.
It’s essential that anyone flying a drone within a FRZ or in the surrounding area operates it in a safe manner, as they can present a significant risk to airport operations. All drone users are encouraged to notify the Air Traffic Services Team at the airport even if flights are outside the FRZ for awareness and to keep you safe.
How to apply to fly your drone
It’s straightforward to apply to fly within the FRZ but this must be done in advance, ideally 24 hours before you intend to fly, using the Notification Form
Before you apply:
- Read the guidance for the airport where you wish to fly your drone provided on this page
- Check the Flight Restriction Zone to ensure that you know where the zone applies
- Complete the Notification Form in advance of your flight and send to Air Traffic Services Team listed on the guidance document
- If you have any queries, please contact the number provided on the guidance document
