Inverness Airport recently hosted a group of S5 pupils, who are taking a Business Skills Foundation Apprenticeship with Inverness College UHI during their final school year.

The students enjoyed a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of Inverness Airport Fire Services before meeting a range of staff from HIAL’s Head Office, which is located at the airport. The students were surprised and impressed with the variety of careers available with HIAL after having the opportunity to talk to staff involved in Air Traffic Control, Finance, Fire Services and Information & Communications Technology.

Feedback from the students included:

“It was a really interesting visit.”

“We were delighted with the wide range of departments that we were shown and surprised that such a large organisation is run from a fairly small office.”

“Everyone we met impressed us with their enthusiasm for their jobs. We were pleased that they were so willing to share with us how they got to the different positions in the company.”

Helen Robertson, HIAL’s Learning and Development Co-ordinator, who organised the visit, said: “It was a really successful day and the students seemed to enjoy meeting staff and finding out what actually goes on at HIAL. We are also looking forward to welcoming one of the students as our own Foundation Apprentice here at Head Office. Morven will be with us each Friday during the 2019/2020 academic year.”

HIAL is committed to developing a young workforce, and to ensuring all its 11 airports continue to provide local communities with attractive job opportunities. This is the beginning of a wider project across HIAL, with more visits and work experience placements planned during the summer at various airports, as well as continued representation at local schools and job fairs.
