HIAL are making a significant investment at Islay Airport for rehabilitaton work to be undetaken on the runways,
This work is essential for the long-term future of the airport, with a target to next resurface in 15 years with minimal maintenance required. The runways were last resurfaced in 2002, and are now reaching the end of their functional life. Therefore, resurfacing works are required to ensure the continuation of lifeline services and essential air connectivity.
The project is intended to commence in May, early June 2023 for an expected period of ten weeks, and will involve the following works:
- Removal and replacement of 50mm of the surface to provide a level surface and required durability.
- Replacement of the top asphalt layer within both runways.
- Delivery of the works required to rehabilitate Runway 08-26, Runway 13-31.and airfield ground lighting units.
On 28 March 2023, the appoint of a contractor to undertake the works was confirmed.
