Its history dates back to the 1700s and it remains a working hub of craftsmanship today. Key landmarks include St Paul’s Square, the last Georgian square in Birmingham, and the Chamberlain Clock, a cast-iron landmark built in 1903. The area is also home to the School of Jewellery, one of the largest jewellery schools in Europe.

Culture, museums and industry heritage
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery houses one of the world’s best Pre-Raphaelite collections alongside extensive art, history and archaeology exhibits. The city’s industrial heritage, known as the “workshop of the world”, can be explored through its museums and historic districts, reflecting its long-standing links to engineering and manufacturing.

Canals and riverside life
Birmingham has more miles of canal than Venice, with around 35 miles crossing the city. The revitalised Brindleyplace area is a popular spot for waterside restaurants, bars and walking routes. Visitors can also explore the city by narrowboat or enjoy peaceful strolls along the towpaths.

Library and knowledge landmarks
The Library of Birmingham is one of the largest public libraries in Europe, covering roughly 31,000 square metres and spanning ten public levels. Its modern architectural design features interlocking metal rings and includes rooftop garden terraces, exhibition spaces and archive collections.
